Clinical Answer: Yes. A snoring bed partner disrupts sleep more than a non-snoring partner, based on consistent findings across polysomnography and subjective sleep reports.

Evidence used: Objective polysomnography from a small crossover study of 10 couples found that eliminating snoring with CPAP cut the partner’s arousal index from 21 to 12 per hour and raised sleep efficiency from 74% to 87%, roughly 62 extra minutes of sleep per night. A larger community-based study, the Sleep Heart Health Study, found partners of people with sleep-disordered breathing had lower arousal indices (13.8 vs 20 events per hour) than the affected partner, though their sleep quality did not differ from couples where neither partner had SDB, suggesting the effect is smaller in general community samples than in clinical ones. Subjectively, about half of bed partners in clinical snoring samples report nightly sleep disturbance, and a population cohort found snoring partners raised the risk of difficulty falling asleep, though the confidence interval was wide and crossed 1. Treating the snorer with CPAP improves partner-reported sleep quality and this improvement tracks with CPAP adherence, though objective PSG measures do not always improve as reliably as subjective ones. Caveat: most of the strongest effects come from clinical or OSA-referred populations rather than general community snorers, and study sizes are generally small.
