How to clean your CPAP Machine

As it is important that you use your CPAP/BiPAP machines daily to help you breathe better at night, it is also important to keep them clean. Regularly cleaning the equipment helps remove oils from the mask and helps it fit comfortably and stay in place. Cleaning the humidifier helps prevent growth of mold and fungus. 

Here is a small guide to help you clean your PAP device and the equipment.

WHAT CAN YOU USE TO CLEAN?

  • Mild liquid soap or Baby shampoo
  • Solution made of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water
  • Clean microfiber towel / clean cloth

MASK

Mask should be cleaned daily

  1. Remove the mask from attachments
  2. Put soap in warm water until it lathers
  3. Wash the mask in the warm soapy water
  4. Rinse the mask under lukewarm running water
  5. Wipe with clean cloth and let it dry 

Once a week, soak the mask in vinegar solution as described above for 30 mins and repeat steps 3 to 5. 

HUMIDIFIER

Humidifier should be cleaned daily

  1. Empty the chamber of all water content
  2. If it is dishwasher safe, place it in the dishwasher (see instruction manual). If now follow steps below;
  3. Put soap in warm water until it lathers
  4. Wash the inside of the humidifier with warm soapy water
  5. Rinse under lukewarm running water
  6. Wipe with clean cloth and let it dry

Once a week, pour vinegar solution as described above into the humidifier for 30 mins and repeat steps 3 to 5. 

TUBING

Tubing should be cleaned weekly

  1. Remove tubing from all attachments
  2. Put soap in warm water until it lathers
  3. Wash the tubing in the warm soapy water
  4. Rinse under lukewarm water
  5. Wipe with clean cloth and hang to dry

Once a week, soak the tubing in vinegar solution as described above for 30 mins and repeat steps 3 to 5. 

HEADGEAR

Headgear should be cleaned weekly

  1. Remove the headgear from the mask, close all velcro tabs so it does not pick up lint from cloth
  2. Wash in warm soapy water (avoid washing in washing machine)
  3. Let it dry

FILTER

Disposable filters should be changed every month

PAP UNIT

Regularly wipe off dust from the PAP device with a clean damp cloth
